MLEC Students Named Gates Millennium Scholars

Two of our students, Flavia Cuervo and Krisna Maddy, were named Gates Millennium Scholars. This year, there were over 52,000 applicants. The two of them were among the 1,000 awarded Gates Scholarships. Although both are heading to the Ivies on full merit scholarships, Gates provides them money for books and expenses as well as covering the cost of their graduate and post graduate studies, including medical school and/or doctoral degrees. Congratulations Flavia and Krisna, and also to their Cambridge Academy leader and Journalism teacher, Ms. Neyda Borges! |

class of 2012-2013, totaling $10,000. National SECME ExxonMobil

"Merit Scholar" and are based on submitted applications that include
GPA, essay, recommendations, and SECME involvement. From the top

Two Win Silver Knight Awards Honorable Mention

Last night was the 55th Annual Silver Knight Awards. This year we had 13 phenomenal nominees representing Miami Lakes Educational Center. They demonstrate everything that is special and great about our school and our academies. This year, MLEC was fortunate to have two honorable mentions, Sandy Rodriguez and Crystal Serrano. They will each receive $500, a plaque, and will be featured in The Miami Herald in the coming days. They, and all of the nominees, credit our school and all of the wonderful teachers, faculty and staff that have taught them, guided and molded them over the last four years. Congratulations also go to Ms. Neyda Borges, who works so diligently with our Silver Knight nominees.

Our journalism students participated in the FIU's 39th annual Journalism Day, Saturday, October 22. Students from schools across the county are all invited to take part in conferences, workshops and competitions hosted by professional journalists, broadcasters and media and communication experts.
This year one of our students, Iqra Ahmed, won first place in the On the Spot Writing contest. She participated in a Q&A session with Gabriel Gabor, an International Communications Consultant for Major League Soccer / Soccer United Marketing, and then had 35 minutes to write a news story.
Iqra received the highest scores for her article.

Robotics Students Capture National

This past weekend, the Miami Lakes Educational Center’s (MLEC) own Team Jag Robotics participated in the 2010 National Championship in Downtown Miami, FL. Five robot teams from MLEC’s Cambridge Engineering Academy entered this event with three spinning drums and two powered wedge robots. The event was a smashing success with the introduction of our new 9th grade team named Sting WMD. Our all girls team who drive and maintain the robot Sting’em placed 2nd in the National Event falling victim to electronic problems in the event finally. Cheers of VICTORY to the Team of RATTLER 2 who won the national championship title. Congratulations to our amazing Robotics students and to their teacher, Mr. Paul Kynerd!

Cisco Students Take Top Three Places in State Competition

In October 2009, Cisco Systems Inc., launched a global networking competition for post-secondary enrolled in the Networking Academy Program. Students from Universities, Community Colleges and Adult Centers around the world competed within their own theatre. There were three rounds of competition and through a process of elimination, produced first, second and third place winners.
Miami Lakes Educational Center's Cisco Networking Academy is pleased to announce that out of four teams that competed, three emerged as winners. We took first, second and third place in the State of Florida! Today, our first place winners will be competing with other state winners for the national title! It will be administered on our campus virtually as a combination of theory and hands-on exam. Please cheer on Romel Meier and Lik Wong as they represent our school and state today!
First place winners will receive an all expense paid trip to Silicon Valley, California to visit Cisco and participate in various activities. They will be able to network with top Cisco leaders as well as engineers that can provide employment opportunities with exposure to new and advanced technologies! Other prizes include iPods, Flip cameras, routers and more.
This contest will be extended to high school academies in the near future!

Mr. Neil Eichelbaum documents Dachau

On a field trip to The South Florida Holocaust Documentation and Education Center's Student Awareness Day, Mr. Eichelbaum met two men, George Katzman, a liberator of Dachau Concentration Camp, and Julius Eisenstein, a survivor from the camp, who inspired Eichelbaum to not only put on a student assembly with their presentations at MLEC, but to film it and make a documentary, "Dachau: Two Perspectives," with students from his ninth grade World History and 12th grade Economics and American Government classes. The 2009 County-wide Automotive
test

The 2009 County-wide Automotive test results have been calculated for 12th grade students. Two or our students, Marcos Rodriguez and Randy Williams have scored high enough to qualify for the practical exam for Miami-Dade County Public Schools and will compete with two teams from Broward County. The winning team of this practical exam will be eligible to compete at the Annual New York Auto Show competition. All costs associated with the trip to New York are paid by the South Florida Auto-Truck Dealers Association, and the winning team of that event is eligible to receive many awards including two Pontiac Solstice.

Three students obtained the AP Scholar with Distinction recognition
and six obtained the AP Scholar award. The AP Scholar
with Distinction award is granted to students who received an
average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3
or higher on five or more of these exams. The AP Scholar award
is granted to students who received grades of 3 or higher on three
or more AP exams.

awards.
These awards recognize the exceptional performance of US students in
the Cambridge June 2008 examination session.
Victoria Melissa Morgan, a Miami Lakes Educational Center student, has won the Cambridge Scholar Award for her performance on three International AS level subject examinations.
