A Moment in Hispanic History
Hernando de Soto was the first European explorer to cross the Mississippi River. He was named governor of Cuba and La Florida. He explored the southern United States and increased Spain’s knowledge of geography of North America.
Administrative
Teachers, there will be a faculty meeting next Tuesday, September 28th at 2:45 in Cafeteria C. There will be a special election for the Teacher of the Year Committee.
Faculty and staff, please refer to the memo placed in your mailbox in reference to hurricane preparedness.
School picture days are Monday and Tuesday next week through you English classes.
Academic
Attention sophomores, juniors and seniors who have taken the FCAT once and must retake one or both sections: The mathematics and reading subtests of the FCAT will be administered Monday, October 4th and Tuesday, October 5th. Any student who has taken the 10th grade FCAT and needs to retake math and/or reading will participate in this test administration. Students will be notified later this week about their testing locations.
FCAT tutoring sessions will be held after school Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week from 2:40 until 3:40 in E202 and E214.
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund has recently published a new list of scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 that are available. Florida International University is sponsoring the 2005 Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest. Prizes range from $500 to $2,000. Teachers please post the information sheets regarding these scholarships that were placed in your mailboxes.
Above the Line Cookie Day will be Tuesday next week.
Clubs/Classes
Miami Lakes Educational Center, we have Jaguars who are in disguise at other schools. They are playing sports and in the bands. So, in sports, the American Sr. High boys bowling team defeated North Miami. American’s team was lead by team captain Tyler Rose, a junior here at Miami Lakes Educational Center. He rolled a 569 series with a game high of 256. Congratulations Tyler!
Students, we want to hear more stories about Jaguars in disguise.
Dance Club applications are available in Student Services if you did not receive one during Club Rush Week. All applications need to be turned in as soon as possible.
HIV/ AIDS Peer educators will meet next week Monday, September 27th at 2:45 in F118 Ms. Handley’s room.
Chess Club will have its 1st meeting next week Wednesday, September 29th in E237 with Mr. U.
Yearbook will have its 1st open meeting next week Thursday, September 30th in F106.
Just a reminder that activities buses every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. You must have participated in an authorized after school activity to receive an Activities Bus Pass and ride the bus. No student may ride the activities bus without a pass. Sponsors, Activities Bus Passes have been placed in your mailboxes if you need more see Ms. Perdomo in F106. Students, if you do not get an Activities Bus Pass from your sponsor, you will not ride the bus. Please fill out the pass and know your regular bus stop.
