Mission Statement

The primary mission of the Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics program is to provide quality educational training designed to meet the current and future needs of the truck and bus repair industry.

Toward this end, the following guidelines are established: assist students to choose, prepare for, enter, and be gainfully employed in the truck and bus repair field; offer a program which emphasizes sound fundamentals while responding to the needs of this particular industry; and provide courses to meet current and specific needs of the student and this industry.

Program Outlook

The Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics program provides students with the technical knowledge and skills for employment as Truck, Bus, and Diesel Mechanics in the Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Repair industry. Instruction includes a combination of classroom theory and practical experience. The program also provides supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Repair occupations. This program is certified by the National Automotive Technical Education Foundation. Students are encouraged to join the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America and eligible students may be nominated by their teachers to join the National Vocational-Technical Honor Society.

Length of Program

The average length of the program is 1,680 hours, approximately 16 months, for adults if attending full time. Actual time in class is dependent upon enrollment status, whether you enroll as a full-time or part-time student, and the length of time the student requires to achieve competencies. This program contains several occupational completion points designed to prepare students for various entry level jobs within this occupational area.

Entrance Requirements
    Adult Students
    • Application.
    • Interview by guidance counselor.
    • Assessment in reading, math and language.
    • Must be at least 16 years old and not attending high school.
    • Fees for supplies, textbooks and uniforms, if required.

    High School Students
    • Application at home school.
    • In good standing at a selected Miami-Dade County Public High School at the 10th, 11th or 12th grade.
    • Approval of their home school counselor.
    • Desire to be employed in the selected vocational field.
    • Fees for supplies and uniforms (if required). No charge for registration, tuition or textbooks.

Entrance Dates

This program operates on an open-entry, open-exit basis. Students may enter the program anytime during the school-year. Entrance is dependent upon space availability. Call (305) 557-1100 and speak to a counselor.
