Medical Secretary

Mission Statement

The primary mission of the Medical Secretary program is to provide quality educational training designed to meet the current and future needs of the Business Technology community.

Toward this end the following guidelines are established: assist students to choose, prepare for, enter, and be gainfully employed in the business technology career field; offer a program which emphasizes sound fundamentals while responding to the needs of this particular industry; and provide courses to meet current and specific needs of the student and this industry.

Program Outlook

This program prepares students for employment as medical secretaries, unit secretaries, medical office clerks, medical insurance secretaries, medical records clerks, machine transcription secretaries. It also provides supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in this occupational area.

The Medical Secretary Program curriculum prepares individuals to perform secretarial duties utilizing software packages such as Microsoft Office and Medisoft. Students will be trained in the areas of machine transcription, business communications, medical terminology and medical office and billing procedures. Instruction also includes transcription of medical reports, such as case histories and the use of insurance forms.

Students are eligible to join Phi Beta Lambda, the vocational student organization for Business Technology Education. Students are also eligible for nomination (by their instructors), into the National Vocational-Technical Honor Society.

Length of Program

The average length of this program is 1,050 hours, approximately 12 months, for adults attending full-time. Actual time in class is dependent upon enrollment status and length of time student requires to achieve competencies. This program contains several occupational completion points designed to prepare students for various entry level jobs within this occupational area.

Entrance Requirements
  • Application.
  • Interview by guidance counselor.
  • Assessment in reading, math and language.
  • Must be at least 16 years old and not attending high school.
  • Fees for supplies, textbooks and uniforms, if required.

Entrance Dates

This program operates on an open-entry, open-exit basis. Students may enter the program anytime during the school-year. Entrance is dependent upon space availability.
