Academy/Strand Choices

The instructional program at Miami Lakes Educational Center's high school is developed around a student's choice of a career academy. Each academy has several specific strands, or programs of study, which will prepare students for college, post-secondary education, and/or employment in the area chosen.

Ninth grade students only need to commit to an academy choice when they apply, but are asked to identify the strand they are interested in. Tenth grade students must select an academy and a specific strand so they can begin the core courses required for completion.

The acceptance of new tenth grade students for the upcoming year will depend on the availability of space in the different academy strands. Once a strand is chosen, students are expected to remain in the program to complete the core curriculum. For additional information, see the sample four-year plan below.

Dress Code

Students in the high school will have an enhanced dress code that reflects the appropriateness of the student's attire for their selected academy. Some academy strands require specific uniforms. Once the student body is selected, parents will take a school-wide, mandatory uniform vote.

Students are required to be neat and clean in appearance while attending classes. Items of dress which are objectionable in the area of health and safety, noise, or classroom disturbance, are prohibited. The following are not permitted:

  • Messages, pictures or symbols on clothing which portray:
    • drugs, smoking or alcohol
    • violence, guns or hate
    • sex or profanity
  • Hats, caps and bandanas
  • Sunglasses
  • See-through blouses without camisole
  • See-through shirt without an undershirt
  • Bare-backs, bare midriffs
  • Halters, tube tops or off the shoulder tops
  • Sleeveless undershirts
  • Shorts, skorts or capri pants
  • Oversized pants
  • Bedroom slippers
  • Clogs, thong sandals or shoes without back straps
  • Taps on shoes
The Center will make determinations as to the appropriateness of clothing. For certain programs, students are required to wear uniforms and/or safety apparel appropriate for the training area in which they are enrolled.

Read the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Code of Student Conduct (Secondary).

Enrollment Application

All students who reside in the regular attendance boundary of Region I high schools are eligible to apply. High schools within the Region I boundaries are American, Miami Carol City, Hialeah, Hialeah-Miami Lakes and Barbara Goleman.

Eligible students must submit an application to be considered for acceptance for next school-year. Criteria for acceptance includes good attendance, conduct and effort as well as a strong commitment to preparing for an identified career within the selected academy.

Specific strand choices may require students to attend summer sessions to facilitate earning certain Vocational Certificates and/or meeting requirements for graduation or college entry.
