About the Program
The Florida Power and Light (FPL)
and Miami Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) Secondary Line
Specialist Program is a two-year dual enrollment program.
This
program will prepare students for a potential job opportunity as an
FPL Apprentice Line Specialist (Electrical
Line Worker)
earning at $30 per hour
upon successful completion of all
program requirements.
Students are instructed by FPL/IBEW line
specialists. All instructors are certified by Miami-Dade
County Public Schools.
Students will complete all testing
and training at the:

Minimum Requirements
To be eligible to participate in the
two-year dual enrollment program, the participant must:

Pass the FCAT
-
Have a 2.0 GPA or greater
-
Have a good school performance
record (e.g. attendance, behavior, etc.)
-
Be at least 16
years old before attending climbing school
-
Eligible to work
in the United States
FPL Pre-qualification Requirements

Pass the
Construction and
Skilled Trades Test (CAST)
during
your 10th or 11th grade year
-
Read and confirm that you can
perform all of the physical tasks that are listed in the
Minimum Job
Requirements

Parents must sign and have
notarized a Hold-Harmless Agreement.

Pass a 30-minute FPL Program
Interview. (Students must submit a résumé)
-
Pass Background Check, Drug
Test, and a Depth/Perception Vision Exam.
-
Pass the
three-week
Climbing School
during summer after school year. Students must be at least 16
years old to attend.
FPL will provide all climbing
equipment.
Secondary Program Dual Enrollment
If
the student successfully passes the
three-week
climbing school,
they will begin the classroom and hands-on training for the two-year
dual enrollment program in August 2009.
All training will occur at FPL on
de-energized facilities and students will have a safety harness when
climbing poles or in the bucket of a bucket truck.
Dual Enrollment Requirements
Students must
-
Have their own transportation (does not apply to students in a
Region 1 school or Turner Technical Arts High School)
-
Transfer from their home school to MLEC (applies to schools
outside of Region 1, Barbara Goleman and any other school where
the curriculum cannot be modified to include the dual
enrollment)
-
Pay for basic student insurance each school calendar year
(approx $15)
-
Pay $400 for personal supplies (i.e. climbing boots, climber
pads/straps, and leather tool belt). You use these items during
your career as a line specialist.

days of month from 7:30 AM – 11:40 AM

return to school to complete the rest of the day

to August, as an FPL temporary employee earning $8 per hour each
day

in 12th grade or is a 2008 high school graduated

Classes held at
FPL 7hrs on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the first and third weeks of
the month and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during the second
and fourth week of the month from 7:30AM–2:30PM

The following
applies to 12th graders who have graduated

Must enroll in
MLEC as a vocational student

Must pay
tuition of approx. $1,200 to continue in Year 2
-
Financial Aid
is available via MLEC for students who qualify
