FPL Secondary Line Specialist (Electrical Line Worker) Program

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

A Line Specialist may work alone or as a member of a crew of workers engaged in the repair of power lines from a point beyond a substation to the point of contact of the customers location, either residential or commercial.  May initiate cut-off of power by de-energizing cables and isolating the section to be repaired or transferred.  This includes the transfer of power lines and equipment such as transformers, insulators, street lights, etc. from damaged, broken, rotted, poles, using climbing gaffs, ladders or bucket trucks.  Strings new cable to stabilize the pole and secure to the ground using pick, shovels and/or other implements as necessary.  Cuts poles to correct height using chain saws.  May locate and be responsible to set poles, using boom truck. Completes appropriate paperwork prior to and following the completion of each job.  Re-connects cables and may splice cables together to restore power to customers.  May be required to work on energized cables.

Minimum Job Requirements

1.         Stands on varied surfaces and terrain while performing work functions for periods up to 4 hours.

2.         Stands on pole using climbing gear (gaffs, belt and tools weighing up to 35 lbs.) for time periods up to 4 hours.

3.         Walks on varied surfaces and terrain 15 feet to 100 feet to/from the crew truck to the work site.  Occasionally walks distances up to 300 feet.

4.         Lifts various tools greater than 2 lbs. up to 40 lbs. with assistance as required and carry various tools with distances from 10 ft. to 100 ft.   Lifts up to 75 lbs. with assistance as required and carry tools distances up to 300 ft.

5.         Lifts various equipment greater than 10 lbs. to 100 lbs. with assistance as required and carries various equipment to the work site with distances from 10 ft. to 300 ft.

6.         Lifts and carries various size ladders greater than 33 lbs. up to 77 lbs. with assistance as required to the work site with distances from 10 ft. to 300 ft.

7.         Must possess the physical ability to climb various height poles up to 30 ft. using climbing gaffs and wearing a tool belt weighing up to 35 lbs.

8.         Must possess the physical ability to climb various height poles up to 75 ft. using climbing gaffs and wearing a tool belt weighing up to 35 lbs. 

9.         Must possess the physical ability to climb into and out of bucket on a bucket truck and work at various heights.

10.       Pulls on ropes up to 45 lbs. of force with distances from 20 ft. to 75 ft. to raise and lower equipment.

11.       Pushes and pulls a hoist up to 35 lbs. of force with distances up to 12 ft. to support cables.

12.       Climbs various height ladders up to 30 feet to perform tasks.

13.       Digs holes, access pits or trenches up to 4 ft. deep with a shovel. Digs holes with posthole digger from 12 –18 inches in diameter and up to 7 ft deep.

14.       Must maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License and operate company vehicles on a daily basis up to an average of 50 miles per day.

15.       Possess the physical stamina to work in adverse and/or inclement weather conditions.

16.       Often required to work extended hours beyond the regular schedule of 8 hours per day, 5 days per week.

General Requirements:

1.      Work Schedule: Possible shift work including after hours and weekends.  May be required to work extended hours in inclement weather.

2.      May be required to travel throughout the system in cases of emergencies, storms, to restore the system..

3.      Must have or be able to obtain a valid CDL class A.

4.      Must be able to work in direct sunlight or at night.
