What's The Current Status Of My Application?
We are not able tell you an application's current status via e-mail. If you submitted your application by the deadline several things are happening. The school counselors are waiting for your middle school grades to be posted on the school system's computer network. Once your grades are available, they'll be matched with your application. When that is done, you will be sent a postcard in the mail. If you don't hear anything by April, call or visit the school for your application information. You may call the school by dialing 305.557.1100. Follow the automated prompts or ask for the High School Division and then ask to speak with a counselor.

What Do You Mean By Academies and Strands?
The instructional programs at Miami Lakes Educational Center are developed around the student's choice of a career goal, which we call academies. Each academy has several specific programs of study, or strands, which prepare students for college, post-secondary education and/or employment in the career area chosen. For a listing of the various career areas, visit the Academies Page.

What Do I Need To Graduate?
The Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the State of Florida Department of Education are responsible for setting graduation requirements. These requirements must be met in order for a student to graduate from high school. You may wish to look at the MLEC Sample Four Year Plan and the requirements for graduation from the Miami-Dade County Public Schools web site. Please note that some academy selections at MLEC may require enrollment in one or more summer sessions to complete the requirements needed for high school graduation.

Are There Community Service Graduation Requirements?
Yes, there are. To complete the community service graduation requirement for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, you must complete a community service project between 9th and 12th grade. No set number of service hours is required for the project unless you are working toward the Florida Academic Scholars' certificate or the Superintendent's Diploma of Distinction. In those cases, a minimum of 75 hours of service is required for each. For further information about these programs, see one of the school counselors.

You can also meet the community service requirements for graduation by successfully completing on of the following elective courses:
Voluntary School/Community Service
     (0.5 credit; social studies elective)
Voluntary Public Service
     (0.5 credit)

For more help, vbisit the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Community Service Guidelines and Forms web site.

How Do I Get A Job At MLEC?
Miami Lakes Educational Center is part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. While you are welcome to come to The Center and inquire about available positions, it is best for you to contact the Personnel Management and Services office at District headquarters. Not only are there more possible positions available, as they operate all public schools in the county, but you will need to go through the District office even if you only want to work at MLEC, regardless of the position you seek.
