Miami Lakes Educational Center High School Division
The state-of-the-art Miami Lakes Educational Center high school opened on August 28, 2000, merging with the outstanding adult vocational and technical facilities of Miami Lakes Educational Center. Our unique campus provides students with a distinctive educational experience that is a true departure from a traditional high school.
The instructional programs are developed around the student's choice of a career goal, which we call academies. Each academy has several specific programs of study, or strands, which prepare students for college, post-secondary education and/or employment in the career area chosen.
The high school started with 9th and 10th graders. In 2001-02, 11th graders began attending and 12th graders will begin classes in 2002-03. All students live within the regular attendance boundaries of Region I high schools, such as American,
Miami Carol City,
Hialeah,
Hialeah-Miami Lakes and
Barbara Goleman.
Our high school policies allow eligible students to submit an application to be considered for acceptance. Criteria for acceptance includes good attendance, conduct and effort at their current school, as well as a strong commitment to preparing for a career within one of our academies. Ninth grade students only need to commit to an academy choice on their application, but are asked to identify the strand they are interested in. Tenth grade students must select an academy and a specific strand so they may begin the basic, or core, courses required for completion.
