Students - This newsletter provides information regarding: college open house and preview dates, available institutional and private scholarships, college representatives coming to MLEC, college fairs and other important reminders. This page will be updated frequently to supply you with the most current information. I hope you enjoy this page on the MLEC web site.

Be careful of letters received in the mail proclaiming to give financial assistance by going to a NO COST interview on Sat. or Sunday. You can wind up paying big bucks for no services.

SENIORS – YOU MADE IT!!! This is it. Your final year in school. It only took you twelve years to reach this milestone!!! I bet you’re saying right now, you can’t believe it’s really here. It seems that each year goes by quicker than the last. I promise you, this year will be no better, and if you can believe it, will just fly by. Sooooooooooooo, I’m here to encourage you to do things early.

You should have identified at least 3 colleges you want to apply to (told you this in Jr. year) and have already taken at least the SAT or ACT or both (again – told you this Jr. year). Calendars are up everywhere regarding this years schedules for both these exams (also in your planners) so there’s no excuse not to register early for these. I have also attached the calendar bellow so you really have NO excuse.

Remember, you can and should check national test dates, registration deadlines, and complete registrations at www.collegeboard.com or www.act.org

You should be starting to fill out your college applications and get your essays started. These should be sent out ASAP and the latest by Thanksgiving. Watch those early action dates!! Also, if you need letters of recommendation, ask now and give plenty of time for your teacher/counselor to complete this. REMEMBER – Some colleges request this letter be sent directly to the admissions office – which means you won’t see them. Please, have your resume ready to hand your teacher or counselor when you request this.

I will be in your classrooms in August to give more information.

DON’T PROCRASTINATE!! Let this be your motto this year.

IMPORTANT: If you are planning to apply to Miami Dade College, Broward Community College (etc.), taking the SAT or ACT could replace the entrance requirement of the CPT to start your credit program. However, if you still plan to take the CPT and you feel you need extra study help, there is a free preparation site on the MDC web page. Go to www.mdc.edu/clast . Click on the link that says “Clast/CPT Free Resource on the left side and follow the directions. Also, remember, that if you pass the CPT with minimum scores, you could have this added to your record for the Bright Futures Gold Seal scholarship. See me for more details. For equivalent scores go to www.facts.org or get a pamphlet from my office.

Something new - At http://www.princetonreview.com/ there are fun things to try. At counselor-o-matic, you can plug in your priorities for college and get a college that matches your list.
