Please note, due to early release day, the C Cafeteria will close at 11:40 a.m. today (9-18-08). This will be our schedule on all early release days.
Students because of you, MLEC earned its “A” Performance Grade. Therefore, students will be allowed to wear “Official” Class and Club shirts in lieu of their Academy shirts on Fridays ONLY. Students you MUST adhere to our uniform policy at all times.
This Friday, Sept. 19th, MLEC will celebrate our “A” by having our 1st Pep-Rally. ALL STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF ARE ENCOURAGED TO WEAR TEAL & BLACK AS WE SHOW OUR JAGUAR PRIDE AND CELEBRATE THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT!
The PSAT/NMSQT test will be given Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Miami Lakes Educational Center. Eleventh grade students who take this test are entered into the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's Scholarship Contests. If you are a Junior and would like to register for this test, see Mr. Moffi in Room E230 or Mrs. Ambas-Viada in E238 by September 29, 2008. The cost of the test is $13.00. There are a limited number of fee waivers available for students with free or reduced lunch.
STUDENTS ARE ADVISED YOU MUST WEAR YOUR ID! ADMINISTRATORS WILL BE ON THE LOOK OUT! DETENTIONS WILL BE ISSUED.
The Hispanic Heritage Committee is having a second period homeroom door decorating contest. All doors will be judged on September 22, and the winners will receive a pastelito party. The theme for our contest is:”Together We Make MLTEC Stronger ".
Students, we need dancers, singers, writers, etc. for our 7th Annual Hispanic Heritage Show. Sign-in to participate in room F-207. Practices will begin next week after school.
All FBLA Applications are due on Friday, Sept. 19, 2008. If you need an application, please stop by room E113. Also, we will have a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 24, in room E113 at 2:40 pm. We will be electing new officers for the 2008-2009 school year. Please attend and be on time. Thank you.
Black History Club will be hosting open enrollment this Friday the 19th 2008. Registration will be held in front of "C" cafe during both lunches. Please announce this every day this week.

Puerto Rican Antonia Novello served as U.S. surgeon general from 1990 to 1993. She was the first woman and the first Hispanic to hold this post.
Novello earned her bachelor's degree in 1965 and her M.D. in 1970 from the University of Puerto Rico. She was a professor of pediatrics at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and earned a master's degree in public health in 1982 from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. She worked with Congress helping to draft the National Organ Transplant Act of 1984. In 1986, she was named director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
As surgeon general, Novello lobbied tobacco companies and the liquor industry to stop their targeting of advertising to minors. She also publicly addressed issues such as children with AIDS, and rising lung cancer rates among women.
Novello was the first surgeon general to bring the issue of domestic violence under a national spotlight. In 1991, she announced that one-third of women murdered every year in the United States are killed by husbands, boyfriends, or ex-partners, and she pointed out that every five years more lives are lost to domestic violence than the 58,000 American lives lost in the Vietnam War.
During her term of office, Secretary of State Colin Powell gave Novello the Legion of Merit Medal, a military medal seldom awarded to civilians. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2004.
After her term as surgeon general ended, Novello became a special representative for UNICEF and a professor at Johns Hopkins University Medical School. She became New York State’s commissioner of health in 1999.

Students are reminded to come to school each day on time! Students if you are absent, remember that 5 unexcused absences in an annual course, or 3 unexcused absences in a semester course, will result in a no credit (N/C) for the class. Remember if you are absent you MUST bring a note and receive an admit to excuse your absence. DO NOT GIVE YOUR NOTE TO YOUR HOMEROOM TEACHER. Admits are issued in the Student Services Office prior to the start of school each day and during lunch and after school in the Main Office with Ms. Cheron. Do not be absent unnecessarily.
Students arriving tardy to school must sign in at the Tardy Center in the C Cafeteria. Students with excessive tardies will be required to serve an Administrative Detention. BE ON TIME!!! AND COME TO SCHOOL EVERYDAY!!! If you have any questions regarding attendance please speak to Mrs. Forteza in the Student Services Office.
